Housing

Stable Foundations, Inclusive Futures

Affordable, Safe, Connected Living

Early in CLA's journey, we recognised the profound need for affordable housing among our constituents. Motivated by this, we embarked on developing generalist affordable housing options in the community that the CLA constituents could benefit from, but would also resonate with our Developmental Practice model. This approach being a commitment to build resources, build relationships, enhance knowledge, and empower decision-making for individuals with disabilities. Over time, both have grown developmentally.

IYHG -

an independent people's organisation/co-operative

CLOSED FOR REFERRALS - Sorry this service is currently at capacity
IYHG stands as a beacon of independence and cooperative spirit. Conceived in 1989, this non-profit initiative was the brainchild of nine young individuals with learning or intellectual disabilities who recognised the lack of affordable local housing options. Their primary objective was clear: provide stable, budget-friendly housing for those with low incomes, with disabilities, including dual disabilities. The company was formed by a number of current members/tenants with the support of CLA, and today, IYHG is entirely operated by its dedicated members.

Proudly owning and managing 11 properties in Brisbane's north, IYHG aims to aid those with disabilities who have limited financial means. By offering safe, accessible, and affordable housing proximate to essential services, such as public transport and shops, the group endeavours to uphold a decent standard of living for all. Furthermore, IYHG is dedicated to disrupting the overrepresentation of disabled individuals facing or at risk of homelessness. Integral to its mission, every tenant is an active group member, playing a vital role in administrative, maintenance, and decision-making avenues.

Village housing -

CLA's social housing

CLOSED FOR REFERRALS - Sorry this service is currently at capacity
1996 marked the inception of Village Housing, CLA's response to the Queensland Government's call for community housing submissions. By 2000, our reach had expanded to oversee 10 units.

When considering the expansion of our Social Housing, CLA's committee, enriched by staff insights, discerned two critical aspects: connection and safety. Both elements emerged as equally pivotal as affordability in the Village Housing blueprint. We identified the risk of our constituents facing isolation or potential exploitation in the community. Consequently, Village Housing's design integrates both disabled and non-disabled tenants, fostering a close-knit micro-community where supportive relationships and capacity-building are paramount.
